The Wind Cries Hortense

Certain names must just be more poetic than others. There are a lot of songs with names in them, but there are some names that just get neglected. I can think of at least 3 Valerie songs. There are a couple of Glorias, a Veronica, a gazillion Marys, an Allison, heck, Tori Amos even managed to fit Lydia into a tune.

Bah. Just imagine how cool it would've been for Them to record "Blanche" instead of "Gloria."

"B-L-A-N-C-H-E
Blaaaaaaaaaaannnnnche"

No?

  • Alison - You a Pixies fan?

    Just curious.

  • Ooooops. I'm obviously not a Pixies fan. Mea culpa. (But I blame it on being in France during the 1990s. Call it "oblivion," not "not being a fan.")

Have you ever heard that "Alison" song by Slowdive? It kind of sucks. :)

  • Nah, it's my bad. To be honest, I had Elvis' song in mind. I figgered the Pixies one would be too obscure to include. Gess i nevr rilly payed mush atention two teh speeling ov thatt Evlis Costelo somg.

Don't remember the Slowdive song, so I've either never heard it or it didn't make much of an impression.

FWIW, my cousin's daughter spells that there name with the two ells.

  • LOTS of songs over the years featuring names of the female persuasion.

I do think that we could do with some more obscure names used in song, though. I mean Rhiannon has already been done, what's next?

  • Terry only made it to one song, but it's a good one.

  • Didn't PJ Harvey do a song called Rebecca?

Mel - Stella would be good. How about Gertrude?

NWG - A few years ago, I met a (very) young mother who said she had named her daughter Rhiannon. When I asked her if the kid rang like a bell through the night, she just stared blankly at me. It scared me a little.

Jrzy - Which song is that? I'm drawing a complete blank.
